Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps! The Marines of RS Kansas City had the privilege and honor to host SgtMaj Ruiz, the 20th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. SgtMaj Ruiz had the opportunity to speak with a large majority of our recruiting force, assist with effecting the promotions of two Staff Noncommissioned Officers, mentor our future officer candidates, and participate with Friends in Service of Heroes for Armed Forces Day. Sincerely appreciate the time that he and his staff gave in order to make this visit happen. 📸: Sergeant Moradian, MAC, RS Kansas CityUnited States Marine Corps Marine Corps Recruiting Lead beyond the numbers.

Fantastic opportunity to speak with all of the future Marine Officers during “Mini-OCS” at Camp Dodge, Iowa. Mini-OCS is a three day exercise with the intent of preparing candidates for Officer Candidate School. For some, it is their first encounter with a Marine Corps Drill Instructor (Sergeant Instructor). We discussed a variety of topics regarding leadership, personal accountability, and their personal transformation to become a Marine Officer. Sometimes the many errors I’ve made in my career allow me to speak from experience. How we overcome our own obstacles is an ongoing area of self-development and improvement. A special thank you to all of the Officer Selection Teams in the Midwest who continue to find the most qualified and capable future Marine Officers. We need you - we need them.United States Marine Corps Marine Corps Recruiting Manpower and Reserve Affairs, HQMC The Basic School #ocs #leadership #development #careers #marines Lead beyond the numbers.

Celebrate the wins. Fantastic evening celebrating with the Marines of RS Kansas City at my home last night. Enjoyed the night with my Station Commanders, Command Group, Officer Selection Teams, Headquarters, and some families. Even got a call from the District Commander mid-party for the Marines to be recognized for their hard work. Never forget to win. Lead beyond the numbers. Courage.Courage requires discipline and action. It requires trust and understanding in your training and confidence in execution. It requires some mental and physical toughness. It also requires perspective. When you find yourself doubting your abilities or get anxious about a task I want you to take a step back and think about what you’re really being directed to accomplish. Recruiting, like any profession, has its challenges. It requires some mental toughness. It requires some resiliency. But think about what you are actually doing on a daily basis. In this video are a Sergeant, a Lance Corporal, and a civilian translator. The Sergeant was the Security Commander. They identified a vehicle they needed to determine was a threat. They all had the courage, confidence, and mental toughness to perform a task that could have taken their lives. This particular vehicle was an VBIED that was not able to be detonated because of their quick and decisive actions. What’s the point: Get perspective. Think about what you’re being directed to do and recognize that the courage you need to accomplish your mission is really just overcoming yourself. Then think about what some of your peers are being asked to do and reflect on if what you’re doing is really that difficult. Perspective. “You got lucky.” I’ve heard this statement more times than I can count. When someone finds success, or a win, there are many who immediately refer to that success as the individual being “lucky.”Luck matters in situations, yes. But being prepared to recognize it turns it into opportunities. With the right mindset, those opportunities could create success. Preparedness doesn’t always mean that you will find success. But being prepared will help you identify situations that present an opportunity to find success. In this photo is a Sergeant leading a route reconnaissance mission along an alternate supply route when he observed a man along the side of the road (luck). The Sergeant could have directed that the patrol continue to pass by the individual or he could make the decision to stop and talk to him. After deciding to stop, it was determined that the man had recently buried multiple improvised explosive devices along the side of the road (opportunity) leading to those being detonated in place and removed as a potential threat (success). We tell Marines all the time to control the individual narrative of success. As professionals. we must take responsibility and act upon personal and professional initiative to turn these lucky situations into opportunities for success. The only way to do that is to apply initiative, rid yourself of excuses, and trust your training and instincts. You control the narrative. You control your success. Congratulations to the Marines and Spouse who won my personal FY23 Commanding Officer's Awards! Every year, I have the distinct privilege to award Marines at our birthday ball. These Marines were voted on by their peers as the deserving recipients. Given the uniqueness of recruiting and the geography between Marines, in order to win these by a vote of your peers, you must make a positive impact. Very proud to lead these Marines in one of the most demanding responsibilities. Since they are my personal awards, I take the liberty of honoring those that have impacted my life over my 27 years of service in order to continue the legacy they have created. We must never forget those that have given so much.FY23 Warrior Award: Staff Sergeant Nicholas P. Eble. Leave.Work-Life-Balance-Health.The Marine Corps, like many other high operational tempo jobs, do not always allow a balance. Matter of fact, it’s sometimes non-existent. But there are priorities. Priorities that might make a positive difference in your own life. Make the choice to be there when you should be present. Whether it’s a trip with the family, or the last little league game of the season, prioritize your life. I promise you that the work you leave behind will be there when you return. Last month, on the heels of the NOTS Conference, and two weeks after suffering a mini-stroke (TIA) on the last shipping week of the FY (FY 106% fair share), I traveled to Florida for a wedding to see my wonderful nephew marry the love of his life. For the first time since assuming command, I disconnected for 2.5 days and went somewhere other than to my laptop in my living room.Take leave. Not taking leave is like holding onto timeouts before the end of the half with a chance to go up a score. Lead beyond the numbers.Side note: Still have some numbness on my right side but definitely improving and almost have complete strength back. #leave #marines #self #care #health #priorities #work #life #balance #stroke United States Marine Corps Marine Corps Recruiting
