At the end of the clash, Yuji, the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, managed to expand his domain and he reached an incredibly high level of strength. It was inside his domain that the fight between these two monsters ended, and Yuji ended up emerging as the victor. However, despite Yuji's major victory, his domain expansion remains to be a major talking point, and that is because it was largely lackluster in more ways than one.
Yuji Itadori Gains A Domain Expansion During His Fight Against Sukuna
- Yuji Learned Berries Techniques
- Yuji Awakened The Shrine Technique
Yuji Itadori gained a domain expansion during his fight against Sukuna. Of course, the basis for Yuji's domain expansion was actually laid long before the fight even began. To create a domain expansion, one needs to have a certain level of mastery over barrier techniques. For Yuji, this happened during the short timeskip between the Culling Game and the Shinjuku showdown Arc. There, thanks to Ui Ui’s technique, Yuji was able to swap twice with two different people within a month. One of his swaps was with Yuta Okkotsu. The other one, more interestingly, was with Kusakabe. It was he who taught Yuji how to utilize many barrier techniques, and this also included the Simple Domain. Given that Yuji had a certain level of grasp over barrier techniques, he was now strong enough to create powers like domain expansion, and at the same time, had what he needed to create the said technique as well.
Domain Expansion! – Yuji Itadori
The second part that was essential for Yuji to get a domain expansion was to have a powerful Innate Technique. Of course, Yuji Itadori awakened Blood Manipulation during the timeskip when he consumed Death Paintings number 4 to 9. Technically, Yuji could have created a Blood Domain. However, the issue with the idea was that Yuji's control over blood manipulation wasn't good enough. This essentially meant that he did not have what it took to create a Domain Expansion with this Innate Technique. However, after Yuji hit a Black Flash against the King of Curses, he was able to awaken the Shrine technique which was engraved in his body. This was something that the author mentioned at the beginning of the story. Finally, it paid off after Yuji delivered this powerful attack.
When Yuji Itadori imbued his Shrine technique in his barrier, he gave rise to a powerful Shrine Domain Expansion. Unfortunately, fans never found out the name of this domain, and similarly, they also have a lot of doubts as to how this domain even works.
Yuji Vs Sukuna Inside The Domain
Yuji Overpowered Sukuna With Brute Strength
The only thing that fans know is that Yuji Itadori is stronger inside his domain. Fans got to see Yuji fight Sukuna in his domain, and as is the basic law of Domain Expansion, it strengthens the user quite a bit. This is because, in a way, they are fighting on their own turf. Domain Expansions see to it that all the stats of the user are buffed up. This meant that Yuji hit harder, faster, and more times inside his Domain Expansion and Sukuna was at a disadvantage. This was the only power of Yuji's domain expansion that is clear to the fans.
That's right, Sukuna! Release Fushiguro, return to me, and I'll spare your life! – Yuji
Inside the domain, fans saw a rather strange montage. Yuji was actually somehow able to showcase locations from his memories to Sukuna. These memories seemed actually real, and according to Sukuna, this was somewhat different from connecting with Yuji on a metaphysical level.
What exactly this was remains unknown to this day, but, Yuji tried to show Sukuna sceneries from his childhood days to evoke any sort of human emotion in him. This was essentially his last warning to Sukuna to turn back and return to him, because otherwise, he would have to kill him. Of course, Sukuna rejected his advances, and with that, the final battle inside the domain began.

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Result Of Yuji Vs Sukuna, Explained
Sukuna and Yuji's intense fight finally comes to an end. Here are the results of this battle.
As Yujii Itadori versus Sukuna began inside the domain, fans felt that this was a battle that would deliver upon the incredibly high expectations. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Yuji's battle against Sukuna inside the domain was somewhat lackluster. Even though he managed to deal deadly damage to Sukuna inside, delivering one powerful blow after another, Yuji ended up requiring help from the likes of Megumi, and at the same time, in the end, Nobara as well. All three characters essentially combined to take down the King of Curses, and what's more, Yuji eventually finished the battle with a Black Flash inside his domain.
Why Yuji's Domain Expansion Was Lackluster
Yuji’s Domain Powers Were Not Elaborated Upon
Yuji Itadori’s domain was lackluster because fans don't know what exactly it did other than buffing him up in terms of his physical stats. The only thing that Yuji accomplished inside his domain was harder and stronger hits, which dealt more damage to Sukuna. Other than that, this domain served absolutely no purpose in the battle. Fans had expected to hear Yuji's domain name, and, more importantly, stronger techniques from him. Sadly, none of that ended up happening.
The biggest gripe that fans have with Yuji's domain is that they did not even get to see the Sure Hit Technique that Yuji had. Yuji essentially imbued the Shrine technique in his domain, but he did not even attack Sukuna inside his domain with his Sure Hit, which every fan was waiting for. Sure Hit attacks are the essence of a domain expansion and the biggest advantage they offer. This was established by Gojo at the very early beginning of the series. The fact that this wasn't even utilized is proof of the fact that Gege failed to deliver a proper domain expansion to the fans.
There was nothing special about Yuji's domain. It wasn't majestic like Sukuna Malevolent Shrine, which was described to be a work of art by the author when it debuted, and it wasn't described to be unbeatable or perpetuated a sense of despair in the enemies like Gojo's Unlimited Void. Yuji's domain didn't even do anything other than buff up his basic stats, and that is where the failure lies.
The fact that fans didn't even get to know the name of his domain expansion or how the technique imbued in the domain even works paints quite a picture of why this Domain Expansion failed to deliver the impact that fans had expected.
Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 269, is set to be September 15, 2024.
