Out of all the cursed techniques revealed so far in Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi Fushiguro’s Ten Shadows Technique has the most mystery surrounding it. Apart from the near limitless potential it seems to have and how diverse its combat applications have been, the Ten Shadows Technique is the only thing in the series that has piqued the interest of Ryomen Sukuna. For someone who has been described as living solely in accordance with his pleasure and displeasure, Sukuna allowing himself to be influenced by another’s ability is some of the highest praise in the entire series.
Users of the Ten Shadows technique are granted two shikigami in the shape of large dogs when it first manifests. While these shikigami obey their master’s wishes, they have some degree of independence and are able to make decisions on their own, either to enforce an optimal plan of attack or to protect their master from harm. To unlock all 10 shikigami available with the technique, a Ten Shadows user must summon and defeat them with shikigami already under their control in a taming ritual. This system means their strength grows exponentially with every new shikigami unlocked, but there are a few that are more powerful than others.
Updated on August 27, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: The shikigami play a notable role in Jujutsu Kaisen, although manifesting them doesn't always require the Ten Shadows Technique. Characters like Yuki Tsukumo and Dagon have been shown to fight using shikigami, while others have also appeared in the series. Considering the prevalence of these inscrutable entities, we have updated this article with some more relevant information.
Major Spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga below.
10 Rabbit Escape Is A Diversionary Shikigami

Used Against:
- Jiro Awasaka
- Toji Fushiguro
- Reggie Star
- Yorozu

10 Most Important Cursed Objects in Jujutsu Kaisen
The power system of Jujutsu Kaisen is immensely complex and rich with various tools and ability sources the sorcerers can utilize in battle.
Rabbit Escape isn’t a singular shikigami, but rather a swarm of mostly harmless rabbits that can grow to a near limitless number if their summoner wishes. Once initially summoned by forming a rabbit-shaped shadow, more and more rabbits can be materialized without any additional effort from the Ten Shadows user. These rabbits are no different from normal rabbits and have no additional abilities, save for their sheer number and potential to multiply indefinitely.
To make up for their lack of power, Rabbit Escape has a unique strength that no other Ten Shadows shikigami possesses. No matter how many of them are destroyed, they can never be completely removed from their user’s arsenal. Megumi tends to use Rabbit Escape as a smokescreen to separate himself from his assailants or as a distraction, so he can land more powerful attacks himself or with other shikigami. On its own, Rabbit Escape doesn’t have much utility, making it the weakest on this list.
9 Great Serpent Was Destroyed Permanently By Sukuna
Debut: Season 1, Episode 4, "Fearsome Womb"
Used Against:
- Various low-level Curses
- Sukuna
While the Great Serpent seemed to have great potential as an offensive shikigami, it was permanently removed from Megumi's arsenal by Sukuna very early on in Jujutsu Kaisen. This shikigami takes on the form of a giant snake that seems to be able to extend its length indefinitely. Its additional abilities are unknown, as it was destroyed in its first full appearance, but even then it made its power apparent.
Great Serpent manifests with exponentially more power, but with all the speed of a regular snake strike, taking even Sukuna by surprise with how suddenly it appeared. While it had prominent fangs, there was little proof to suggest that Great Serpent had any venomous properties. The majority of its power seemed to lie in its striking power, and it excelled in restraining opponents with its powerful jaws until it was forced to contend with Sukuna.
8 Tiger Funeral’s Full Abilities Were Never Revealed
Debut: As Merged Beast Agito in Chapter 233 "Inhuman Makyo Shinjuku Showdown, Part 11"
Used Against:
- Satoru Gojo

10 Saddest Moments In The JJK Manga
JJK is one of the most daring and emotionally jarring franchises in production, and the manga embraces this in full force.
Tiger Funeral was one of the shikigami tamed by Sukuna in the period between Gojo Satoru’s escape from the Prison Realm and their fateful match on December 24th. Unfortunately, this shikigami was never summoned on its own. Instead, Tiger Funeral formed part of the Nue Totality: Merged Beast Agito that Sukuna summoned to aid him in his battle against Gojo. As such, very little is known about this shikigami.
In fact, the only reason fans know of Tiger Funeral is that Gojo referred to it by name when he noticed its influence on Sukuna’s fusion. Merged Beast Agito combined several familiar features from other Ten Shadows shikigami, but its only unknown was a torso patterned with Tiger Stripes and muscular legs. The extraordinary physical abilities Agito displayed were uncharacteristic of Nue, Round Deer or Great Serpent, the other shikigami that were fused to create Sukuna’s Chimera, which suggests that Tiger Funeral may have been an all-purpose shikigami like the Divine Dogs. However, without the full picture of its abilities, there’s no way to accurately gauge its strength.
7 Toad Can Be An Incredibly Versatile Shikigami
Debut: Season 1, Episode 4, "Fearsome Womb"
Used Against:
- The Finger-Bearer
- Jiro Awasaka
- Toji Fushiguro
Despite not having the raw strength of the other Ten Shadows shikigami, Toad excels in a support role when used in conjunction with them. It seems to have size manipulation abilities and can be much bigger than the average human at its largest. Toad has a powerful prehensile tongue that comprises the bulk of its support capabilities. Megumi has used this ability to pull off maneuvers that would be traditionally impossible several times, restrain his opponents, or extract his allies from dangerous situations.
Toad was also the first shikigami that showcased the ability to borrow the traits of other surviving shikigami, in one instance showcasing both the wings of Nue and Rabbit Escape’s ability to duplicate. It is another all-rounder that may not have an immediately obvious outstanding quality of its own, but has nonetheless proved its worth as one of the most versatile Ten Shadows shikigami several times over. While Megumi was facing Toji Fushiguro during the Shibuya Incident, Toad was able to match the superhuman assassin's reaction time. It pulled its master out of the way of an attack that would have surely killed him.
6 Piercing Ox Has The Most Raw Power of Any Shikigami
Debut: Chapter 218, "Bath, Part 3"
Used Against:
- Yorozu
Piercing Ox was another shikigami that Megumi wasn’t able to tame, but was debuted by Sukuna in his battle against the reincarnated sorcerer Yorozu. Piercing Ox is a large, powerful bull with short horns, a broad face, and heavyset shoulders. This shikigami has only one purpose, and that is to cause as much destruction as possible to anything in its path.
Piercing Ox is the least versatile of any Ten Shadows shikigami, but makes up for this with its sheer raw power. Its only attack is to charge at opponents, and the force it is able to produce when it strikes only continues to increase the longer it charges. Piercing Ox’s one weakness is that it can only move in a straight line, and can’t immediately reposition itself towards a moving target should its charge miss. If its attack connects, however, the damage Piercing Ox is able to unleash can be enough to decide the battle in its master’s favor.
5 Max Elephant Is The Largest 10 Shadows Shikigami
Debut: Season 1, Episode 18, "Sage"
Used Against:
- Noritoshi Kamo
- Chizuru Hari
- Satoru Gojo

Can JJK Wrap Everything Up in Just 5 Chapters?
Jujutsu Kaisen's announcement that the manga will be ending may seem less a blessing than a curse, but JJK fans know that curses hold special power.
1
Max Elephant doesn’t appear as often as the other Ten Shadows shikigami, but is always an impressive sight when it does. It manifests as a full-grown pink elephant with all the weight and power of the real-life animal for which it is named. Megumi often takes advantage of its crushing weight to apply pressure on his opponents, summoning Max Elephant directly on top of them to force them into submission.
Since Max Elephant and its special ability burn through more curse energy than any other shikigami, Megumi prefers to summon it on its own. It has the ability to shoot a powerful jet of water from its trunk, dousing its wielder’s opponent in a deluge that can flood indoor areas within seconds. This jet of water can be used offensively, as Sukuna did when he imitated the Blood Manipulation Technique: Piercing Blood, or defensively to forcefully push an enemy away. However, Max Elephant pales before a few other Ten Shadows Shikigami on this list.
4 Nue Is Megumi Fushiguro’s Favorite Shikigami
Debut: Season 1, Episode 4, "Fearsome Womb"
Used Against:
- Momo Nishimiya
- Hanami
- Chizuru Hari
- Maki Zenin
Nue has the most appearances of any shikigami due to its sheer versatility. It takes the shape of a giant bird-like creature with reddish feathers covering its entire body and a skeletal carapace for a face. Nue is strong enough to carry both its own weight and that of a human being in flight, making it Megumi's preferred mode of transportation over short distances in situations where he doesn’t have to hide his jujutsu.
Nue’s wings have the added property of being infused with electricity, allowing it to deliver incapacitating volts to targets it comes into contact with. In combat, Megumi has it dive-bomb his opponents, transferring the electricity to them through physical contact and shocking them. In Sukuna’s hands, Nue manifested as a much larger version and was able to transmit its electricity to several targets that were hundreds of feet away. After being shocked by Nue, Nishimiya Momo was paralyzed for a few minutes and could do nothing but wait for its effect to wear off.
3 Divine Dogs Are A Jujutsu Sorcerer’s Best Friend
Debut: Season 1, Episode 1, "Ryomen Sukuna"
Used Against:
- The Finger-Bearer
- Hanami
- Yorozu
Divine Dog takes the shape of two dogs that are alike in every aspect except for their coat colors. Compared to the rest of the Ten Shadows shikigami, Divine Dog showcases the most affinity for Megumi. They respond to affection from humans much like any regular pet dog would and behave with more concern for Megumi and his allies than the other impersonal shikigami do. This bond might be a result of how long they’ve been available to Megumi, as they are the first shikigami granted by the technique.
After only a few appearances, one of the Divine Dogs was destroyed by a Finger-bearer cursed spirit, and its essence absorbed into the other one. It now manifests as a much larger and more ferocious shikigami known as Divine Dog: Totality. Totality is much stronger and faster than each individual Divine Dog with claws strong and sharp enough to penetrate even the hide of Special Grade spirits. Even in its Totality form, Divine Dog showcases the most agency of any shikigami, coordinating attacks without any input from Megumi, or snatching him away from attacks faster than he himself can perceive.
2 Round Deer Is The Only Shikigami With Reverse Cursed Technique
Debuted in Chapter 218, "Bath, Part 3"
Used Against:
- Yorozu
- Satoru Gojo
Round Deer might not have much combat ability, but it is one of the most valuable shikigami the Ten Shadows technique grants simply because it can project reverse cursed energy. Even among jujutsu sorcerers, the ability to use reverse cursed energy to heal, much less project it to restore the wounds of others, is an incredibly rare talent. The fact that a shikigami exists which is capable of bypassing the arduous process of cracking reverse cursed technique for its owner is nothing short of miraculous.
Unfortunately, Round Deer was yet another one of the shikigami that Megumi wasn’t able to unlock. This shikigami only debuted after Sukuna stole his body and tamed his remaining shikigami off-page. Round Deer’s ability to use reverse cursed energy means its wielder never has to worry about injuries during battle. Merely making contact with this shikigami, whether in a full or partial manifestation, would be enough to restore them to full health, no matter the severity of their injury.
1 General Mahoraga Is Jujutsu Kaisen’s Most Powerful Shikigami
Debuted in Season 2, Episode 14, "Thunderclap, Part 2", but was teased several times prior
Used Against:
- Haruta Shigemo
- Satoru Gojo

15 Anime Men Hotter Than Gojo From Jujutsu Kaisen
JJK's Gojo might be a handsome sorcerer that melted fans' hearts instantly, but there are plenty of anime men that outshine him with their good looks.
The Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga is easily the strongest shikigami of the Ten Shadows technique, and truly all of Jujutsu Kaisen. Its potential surpasses that of fully fledged Grade 1 sorcerers and even some Special Grades. Mahoraga manifests as a giant humanoid creature with 4 wings where eyes would be and a wheel hovering above its head. It is commonly referred to as the crown jewel of the Ten Shadows, even though no user of the technique managed to successfully tame Mahoraga until Sukuna came along.
Mahoraga has the ability to adapt to any phenomenon after experiencing it enough times. This means that unless a cursed technique is powerful enough to destroy it in one attack, Mahoraga will eventually evolve to the point where it is immune to its effects. Against cursed spirits, Mahoraga is infinitely more dangerous since, in addition to its adaptation, it also has the Sword of Extermination permanently attached to its arm. This Cursed Tool is constantly surging with positive cursed energy, which instantly destroys the negative cursed energy that makes up a cursed spirit's matter.
*Numerous Other Characters Also Use Shikigami
Other Notable Shikigami | User | Debut |
---|---|---|
Moon Dregs | Junpei Yoshino | Episode 11, "Narrow-Minded" |
Garuda | Yuki Tsukumo | Episode 38, "Fluctuations" |
Judgeman | Hiromi Higuruma | Chapter 159, "Judgment" |
Death Swarm | Dagon | Episode 20, "Nonstandard" |
Megumi Fushiguro's Ten Shadows Technique is inherited by members of the Zenin Clan, which is the only reason the family agreed to "purchase" Megumi from his father Toji. There seems to be limitless potential embedded in this ability, especially in terms of merged shikigami. At this point, fans are wondering if Mahoraga and Rabbit Escape can be fused to create an apocalyptic avalanche of nigh-invincible monsters. That said, there are several other independent shikigami introduced throughout Jujutsu Kaisen.
Junpei Yushino develops the jujutsu ability to manifest Moon Dregs, a jellyfish-like entity that can be used for both offense and defense. Despite its venomous powers, however, Moon Dregs isn't nearly strong enough to take on most sorcerers above Grade 3. Then there's Yuki Tsukumo's Garuda, a shikigami that's inextricably linked to her cursed technique Star Rage. More impressively, Garuda has as much agency as Megumi's Divine Dogs, allowing it to act by itself. Even the Special Grade Dagon employs a swarm of carnivorous fish shikigami within its Domain, the Horizon of the Captivating Skandha.
